Ingrid Betancourt est née à Bogotá, en Colombie, le 25 décembre 1961. Elle a vécu la majeure partie de son enfance à l’étranger et surtout en France. Française par son premier mariage, elle milite pour les Droits de l’Homme et contre l’injustice, la corruption et les narcotrafiquants. Elle est otage des FARC depuis le 23 février 2002.
Une autre franco-colombienne, Aïda Duvaltier, enlevée un an avant Ingrid Betancourt, a été retrouvée morte en 2006.
